The water is talking? and other ideas from the Indigenous Wild
Dr. Mary Hermes
Picture a world where all the Beings communicate with one another. A cacophony of sounds, movement that are transmitted and received across many differences. This is our planet, and the indigenous places (the whole planet) co-evolved with many Beings who did, and some who still do, “talk” to each other. Now picture a land where anyone with an accent, let alone a language, is not Standard English is subject to disenfranchisement, if not outright banishment.
In this talk, I would like to explore what a language is, when all the more-than-human-beings are also included, and what this means about indigenous languages. Then I am going to tell you why a genre of storytelling that has capture the hearts of many of our young people (video games) is good place to tell the story about that place, the one with a cacophony of sounds. If you are still interested at this point, I will tell you about the wild ride I am having, making a video game with indigenous creatives.
